stop giving girls the short shift on ice time in the city of toronto

Tween Girls’ hockey league SEEKS TO BRING CHANGE and equity TO ICE ALLOCATION POLICY

Did you know that more than 93% of community youth hockey ice time in the City of Toronto is allocated to boys?

Our Tween Girls' Hockey League has set out to change this. We worked with Councillor James Pasternak who motioned for a review of the City’s Ice Allocation Policy. That reveiw is currently underway and we are eager to work with the City alongside a variety of stakeholders to inform it.

Some background:

The current City of Toronto ice time allocation policy discriminates against girls and other equity-deserving groups, contrary to the Ontario Human Rights Code. See our legal letter here.

Due to the antiquated practice of first honouring existing contracts with legacy leagues – which are largely skewed in favour of boys – girls and girls’ leagues will remain significantly underrepresented in City prime ice allocations. Similarly, other equity-deserving groups whose needs are not met by the traditional hockey system, have difficulty starting new leagues because of the “grandfathering” of rink allocations.

We have vowed to turn the loss of much our season into a win for all girls and equity-deserving groups in the City of Toronto.

If you believe girls and other equity-deserving groups should have a fair shot at ice time in the City of Toronto, please read on to learn more about our quest.

As the largest city in Canada, changes to the City of Toronto ice allocation process would set a precedent and change the game for girls across the province and our country.

We make headlines!
